Why flexible work options are important

- The pandemic thrust almost the entire world into remote work. And it turns out that as things are opening back up, employees would actually like to continue working remotely. And employers, it turns out, aren't necessarily so keen. So employers, I do have something for you to think about related to equity and inclusion. The pandemic and working from home absolutely set our diversity efforts back by maybe a decade or more. Consider that women who are already doing that second shift when they get home from work were now doing a third and a fourth shift because they had kids at home with them. Also consider that in about April of 2020, the white workforce and black workforce were fairly equal in their unemployment rate. And by August, 2020, the black workforce unemployment rate was still the same while the white workforce, their unemployment rate had gone down. My name is Catherine Mattice. I'm the founder and CEO of Civility Partners. And we're a consulting firm focused on building positive, inclusive, and thriving workplaces. Work is no longer a place that we go to every morning. Work is an experience and it can be had from anywhere. We have to really consider the fact that working from home and flexible schedules, that's no longer a Band-Aid for COVID. It's the new reality.
